- Detailed presentation of the chapters -
In the following you can read a summary and some citations from each Chapters of the book.
Biomovie: Chapter 1. - INTRODUCTION
The book Biomovie. Ecocriticism and Popular Film introduces the Reader to the ecocritical approach of popular, mostly 21th century Hollywood films.
Biomovie: Chapter 2. - THE RHETORIC STRATEGIES OF BIOMOVIES
Elitist critics usually deem Hollywood movies inappropriate to convey environmental messages. Others think that the rhetorical means of feature films are more effective in motivating people than “boring” and didactic documentaries (even if they feature such stars as diCaprio).
Biomovie: Chapter 3. - THE TESTAMENT OF ECOLOGY
The two movies mentioned in the title are not open for easy comparison, even though they are both trying to represent existential problems which arise from the incompatibility of modern life with the order of nature through rather unusual themes.
Biomovie: Chapter 4. - THE MONSTROUS FEMININITY OF EARTH
Filmic representations of the interconnections of ’woman’ and ’nature’ in Forces of Nature, Armageddon, The Vicker Man, Under the Dome and Avatar.
Biomovie: Chapter 5. - GYNECOLOGY: FROM FEMINISM TOWARDS ECOFEMINISM
The chapter analyses PETA advertisement strategies and two films that associate the treatment of animals and animal experiments with the scientific and mainstream cultural concept of women in the Western World.
Biomovie: Chapter 6. - ECOPSYCHOSIS: ILLNESS AS ENVIRONMENTAL RESISTANCE
This Chapter analyzes films that associate certain mental ilnesses, depression, scyzophrenia with environmental disaster although in different ways and extent.
Biomovie: Chapter 7. - WHISPERING WITH RAPTORS
There have benne serious changes in the treatment of animals in the last couple of years.
Biomovie: Chapter 8. - ENERGY TO THE SHIELDS!
The threat of ecological crisis and the theme of environmental problems appears in more and more science fiction films around the millennia, often interconnected with the theme of peak oil.
